TV Expert Reveals 6 Underrated HBO Shows You Need to Watch

A TV expert has spotlighted six underrated HBO series that they describe as "true gems that almost no one talks about." The Spanish-language X account @fansdepantallas, which regularly highlights under-appreciated shows, said: "If you've already watched the most famous ones, here are six series that probably slipped past you and that deserve way more recognition."

Somebody Somewhere

This comedy-drama follows a woman in her 40s dealing with life after the death of her sister. It stars Bridget Everett as Sam Miller and Jeff Hiller, who in 2025 won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Joel. @Fansdepantallas described the programme as "one of the most human series of the last few years." "It doesn't need big twists or action to move you," they said. "Just incredible characters, very natural humour, and conversations that feel like real life. One of those that leaves you with a smile." All three seasons of Somebody Somewhere are available to stream on NOW TV, Sky, or HBO Max.

The Deuce

Created by The Wire producer David Simon, this series depicts the early years of the pornography industry in New York City. It features a large supporting cast, including James Franco, who plays twins, and Maggie Gyllenhaal. @Fansdepantallas said: "If you liked The Wire, give it a shot. David Simon portrays the birth of the adult film industry in 1970s New York with a spectacular level of detail. Very underrated." All three seasons of The Deuce are available to stream on NOW TV, Apple TV, or HBO Max.

High Maintenance

Originally a web series, High Maintenance made the jump to TV in 2016. Each episode depicts a different set of characters in New York City, linked only by their common connection to a drug dealer known as 'The Guy'. @Fansdepantallas described the programme as "a little gem that went unnoticed by many people." "Each episode tells a different story united by a marijuana deliveryman in New York," they said. "Original, funny, moving, and surprisingly deep." All four seasons of High Maintenance are available to stream on HBO Max.

Irma Vep

This eight-episode miniseries is based on a 1996 French comedy-drama of the same name. It stars Alicia Vikander as an American movie star in Paris, as the line between herself and the character she is playing in a crime thriller blurs. @Fansdepantallas said: "Alicia Vikander stars in this utterly fascinating series about the filming of a new version of a classic of French cinema. Metacinema, humour, drama, and tons of style. Very different from any other series." All eight episodes of Irma Vep can be streamed on NOW TV or Sky.

The Baby

A British horror-comedy depicting a woman in her late 30s whose life implodes when she is unexpectedly landed with a baby, which turns her life upside-down with its mysterious powers. @Fansdepantallas said: "A very strange mix of horror, dark humour, and social critique. It starts from a completely absurd premise... and manages to make it work. If you're looking for something different, it's well worth it." The Baby, which consists of eight episodes, is available to stream through NOW TV and Sky.

Station Eleven

This 10-episode post-apocalyptic miniseries is based on a novel by John Mandel and depicts a world 20 years after a flu pandemic resulted in the collapse of civilisation. @Fansdepantallas described it as "not your typical post-apocalyptic series." "It speaks much more about people, about art, and about how we move forward after a tragedy," they said. "For many, one of the best miniseries of recent years." Station Eleven is not available on any UK streaming service, but can be purchased on platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Sky Store.
