Traitors halted as James Acaster needs welfare support

Filming of the BBC's Celebrity Traitors was paused after contestant James Acaster became visibly distressed during a roundtable confrontation, with welfare staff stepping in to support him before recording could resume.

The comedian, who had never wanted to become a Traitor but was selected by Maya Jama and Richard E Grant to form their trio at the start of the series, revealed himself during the latest episode. Throughout the show he had insisted he would never deceive anyone and would keep "playing the game as a Faithful."

Confrontation at the Roundtable

James had remained largely unnoticed until the penultimate episode, but under intense questioning from Michael Sheen, he broke down in front of viewers. Sheen, who declared himself "Vengeful Daddy" after the banishment of fellow Faithful Joanne McNally, had previously interrogated Maya in the kitchen and turned his attention to King Kenny, who had stayed completely beneath suspicion.

When Sheen began pressing James at the roundtable, the comedian admitted: "I was made a traitor without wanting to be. I've had a unique experience on this that no-one has had before, I wanted to be a faithful and that's all I wanted to be. But I couldn't just say 'guys, vote for me.'" He was unanimously removed from the castle after his fellow contestants were left speechless.

Behind-the-Scenes Welfare Support

What audiences did not see was the interruption in filming while a distraught James required support from the welfare team. According to The Sun, James was reportedly so "distraught" that production had to halt. During the pause, BBC welfare staff spoke with him to ensure his wellbeing before filming could start again.

A BBC insider told the Daily Star: "What you don't see is the moment when James got upset as he crumbled when he could see he was about to be caught. Both the producers and the other celebrities could see how he was struggling with the pressure of keeping his true identity secret and he reached some kind of breaking point when he was confronted."

Support for Other Contestants

James was not the only recipient of welfare support, as the team are also understood to have spent time with the remaining stars involved in the show before recording could continue. The behind-the-scenes support provided to the celebrities, including James, was not filmed and none of it appeared in the broadcast version.
