The Traitors returned for its fourth season on BBC One, but the new series has already sparked controversy among viewers due to a major format shake-up. Host Claudia Winkleman introduced a 'Secret Traitor' twist, leaving fans split on social media.
In the opening episode, Winkleman revealed that alongside the usual Traitors, she would also appoint a Secret Traitor whose identity would remain hidden from everyone, including the other Traitors. 'Nobody will know who that is, not the Traitors and not even you,' she explained, holding up a red cloak.
However, the twist did not sit well with some viewers. One fan wrote on social media: 'Tbh the Secret Traitor thing is gonna get old real fast.' Another complained: 'Hate the Secret Traitor twist. Might be proved wrong but it spoils something for the viewer imo.' Others expressed confusion, asking how the Secret Traitor would interact with the other Traitors and what would happen if they were banished.
Despite the criticism, some fans praised the twist as 'absolute genius.' The newly appointed Traitors—Stephen, Rachel, and Hugo—will now navigate the game alongside the mystery player. The Traitors airs on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer.
