Top Gun 3 Officially Confirmed with Tom Cruise Returning as Maverick
Paramount Pictures has officially announced the development of Top Gun 3, with Tom Cruise set to reprise his iconic role as flying ace Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. The confirmation came during the annual CinemaCon presentation this week, marking one of the first major film announcements in Paramount's new era following its merger with Skydance.
Details of the Upcoming Sequel
The 63-year-old actor will headline the third installment in the action drama series, with no other returning cast members confirmed at this time. Jerry Bruckheimer is confirmed to return as producer, while director Joseph Kosinski's involvement remains unconfirmed. Bruckheimer previously noted in 2024 that they had pitched Cruise a story he liked, but the actor's busy schedule required patience.
Cruise himself addressed the project last year, stating, "We're thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what's possible. It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick. So, all of these things we're working on, we're discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick."
Background and Corporate Context
The film follows the extraordinary success of 2022's Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed $1.5 billion globally and earned six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. That sequel itself followed the original 1986 film directed by Tony Scott.
Top Gun 3 has been a priority for Paramount since completing its merger with Skydance in 2025, with David Ellison highlighting its importance. The film will exist under the new, larger company as Paramount also moves to acquire Warner Bros in a $111 billion deal. Ellison has reportedly expressed interest in developing a follow-up to Days of Thunder with Cruise as well.
Paramount's Broader Film Slate
During the CinemaCon presentation, Ellison emphasized ambitions to release 30 movies annually under the Paramount-Warner banner. Other projects mentioned in the upcoming slate include:
- Scary Movie 7
- Taylor Sheridan's Call of Duty adaptation
- Damien Chazelle's new film starring Cillian Murphy
- A new horror film set in the Longlegs universe
Tom Cruise's Current Projects
Cruise, last seen in what was billed as the final Mission: Impossible film, is next set to star in Digger, a dark comedy from Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The film was previewed at CinemaCon, with attendees noting Cruise's nearly unrecognizable appearance as a billionaire who triggers an environmental disaster.
The announcement of Top Gun 3 comes amid ongoing industry developments, including recent opposition from figures like Mark Ruffalo and Emma Thompson to Paramount's Warner acquisition. However, the confirmation of Cruise's return ensures continued excitement for one of cinema's most enduring action franchises.
