Paramount Pictures has officially confirmed that Tom Cruise will reprise his role as Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in a third instalment of the Top Gun franchise. The announcement was made during the annual CinemaCon presentation, marking the film as one of the first major projects under Paramount's new era following its merger with Skydance and upcoming acquisition of Warner Bros.
The 63-year-old actor will be joined by producer Jerry Bruckheimer, though director Joseph Kosinski has not yet committed to the project. In 2024, Bruckheimer revealed that Cruise was enthusiastic about the story pitched to him, but scheduling conflicts due to the actor's busy slate remain a factor. Cruise himself hinted at ongoing discussions about the sequel last year, noting that it took 35 years to develop Top Gun: Maverick.
The sequel follows the phenomenal success of 2022's Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed $1.5 billion worldwide and earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. That film itself was a follow-up to Tony Scott's 1986 original. David Ellison of Skydance has prioritised Top Gun 3 as a key project, and is also reportedly hoping to develop a Days of Thunder sequel with Cruise.
During the CinemaCon presentation, Ellison outlined ambitions to release 30 films annually under the combined Paramount-Warner banner. Other upcoming titles include Scary Movie 7, a Call of Duty adaptation from Taylor Sheridan, Damien Chazelle's new film starring Cillian Murphy, and a horror film set in the Longlegs universe. Cruise will next appear in Alejandro G. Iñárritu's dark comedy Digger, playing a billionaire who causes an environmental disaster.
