Coronation Street fans now have the chance for their dogs to appear on the cobbles, thanks to a new competition launched by This Morning. The ‘Pup Idol’ contest will see one lucky pooch win a walk-on role in the nation’s longest-running soap.
Actress Jodie Prenger, who plays Glenda Shuttleworth on the show, announced the competition on This Morning. She said: “Your furry friend could be joining that illustrious list. I am so excited to be part of the judging panel that will be putting the pups through their paces.”
To enter, owners must submit a video no longer than one minute, along with up to 250 words explaining why their dog should be chosen. The deadline for nominations is Friday, 25 July at 12.30pm. Successful entries will be judged on star quality, cuteness, training, and the ability to engage the audience.
Coronation Street’s assistant director advised that dogs should be well-trained and have “puppy dog eyes”. She recalled: “We’ve had a dog once poop on set, someone nearly stood in it, so they need to be well trained.”
Live finals will be held on This Morning in September, where Prenger will judge alongside Strictly Come Dancing’s Shirley Ballas and resident vet Dr Scott Miller. The winner will be chosen by public vote.
