The Undeclared War season 2: episodes and schedule change

The Undeclared War season 2 consists of six episodes, with the final two now scheduled to air as a double bill on Wednesday, August 5, after the drama was removed from this week's schedule in favour of Celebrity Hunted.

Return after four years

Simon Pegg's cyber thriller returned to Channel 4 last month after a four-year break, picking up exactly where the first series ended. The Wales and Bristol-shot series follows an elite GCHQ team working covertly to prevent cyber-attacks on the UK in post-pandemic 2024.

The drama centres on Danny Patrick, played by Simon Pegg, the GCHQ Director of Operations. The first series ended on a cliffhanger in 2022, with satellite imagery revealing an unidentified aircraft entering British airspace.

Season 2 focus

The second series has focused on Danny and his wife Barbara Patrick, played by Siân Brooke, a former MI5 officer now working as an analyst at GCHQ. Their relationship provides the emotional core as they face personal and professional challenges that put them on a collision course.

Discussing the themes, Simon said: "As always, we're dealing with international intrigue. Cyber warfare is the new frontline." He added: "When you watch the news and see a physical attack, an explosion or a terrorist incident, you witness the consequences. What you don't see is what's happening in cyberspace, even though the level of aggression can be comparable. That's one of the central themes of the show."

Episode details and schedule

All six episodes were written by Colin Teevan and directed by Paul McGuigan. The series began on Tuesday, July 21, airing on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. However, this week's episodes were pulled for Celebrity Hunted, so the final two will air back-to-back on Wednesday, August 5: episode five at 9pm and episode six at 10pm.

The synopsis for episode five reads: "Barbara comes under Charlie's scrutiny as tragedy strikes GCHQ. Danny, Saara and Roz work together in an attempt to help Vadim escape. Danny makes an earth-shattering discovery." The finale hints: "Danny confronts Barbara and puts everything on the line in order to bring the truth to life. Roz and the team must race against the clock to find out what the malware is searching for."

All episodes are available to stream on Channel 4.
