Netflix has confirmed that The Sandman will conclude with its second season, putting an end to speculation about a potential third season. The announcement follows the release of the bonus episode 'Death: The High Cost of Living' on July 31, which serves as the season finale.
Showrunner Allan Heinberg explained to Variety that the series was always intended to cover Dream's story exclusively, and after reviewing the remaining source material from the comics, the creative team determined there was only enough narrative for one more season. 'We knew we only had enough story for one more season,' Heinberg said, expressing gratitude to Netflix for allowing them to produce a faithful adaptation.
The second season was released in two parts, with the bonus episode featuring Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death experiencing life as a human for a day. Heinberg reflected on the production, noting that knowing the show would end allowed the team to maximise their time and budget. 'We knew this was going to be the last time we'd all be working together to tell this extraordinary and moving story,' he told Netflix's Tudum.
Despite the conclusion, Heinberg admitted he would 'instantly' seize any opportunity to create further instalments if given the chance. The Sandman season two is available to stream on Netflix now.
