The Rapture fans distracted by 'unbelievable' plot in finale

The BBC's psychological thriller The Rapture concluded its five-part run on Sunday night, but viewers were distracted by a glaring detail: characters dressed for cooler weather despite the show's scorching setting.

Starring India Amarteifio and Ruth Madeley as Gabs and Bethany, the drama follows 17-year-old Bethany, who is in a psychiatric ward after being accused of killing her mother. Psychologist Gabs is called in to assess her, and Bethany claims to have psychic abilities, begging Gabs to help prove her innocence.

Plot twist and viewer complaints

In the finale, it was revealed that the real murderer was Rob (Morgan Watkins), a member of the Climate First group who worked for oil company chief Max Leland (Stephen Campbell Moore), involved in shady dealings to protect drilling operations.

However, the show's fictional apocalyptic heatwave, with temperatures reaching 40°C, clashed with the actors' attire. Viewers took to social media to point out the inconsistency.

One person wrote: "Watching #TheRapture, it's meant to be around 38 °C in this drama, and people are wearing long sleeve tops, jeans and hoodies!" Another commented: "The place is roasting hot, but no one looks bothered." A third noted the clothing looked 'a little too warm' for the temperatures, while a fourth said: "It's just not believable!"

Mixed reactions from viewers

Despite the criticism, some praised the series. One viewer said: "Finished #TheRapture and thought the entire series was incredibly captivating. The writing and performances were so compelling that they felt true and authentic." Another wrote: "Loving this drama #therapture," and a third added: "Thought it was quite good. About time there was something decent to watch at 9pm on a Sunday!! #TheRapture."

The Rapture is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
