The One Show's 20th anniversary special was interrupted by an alarm during the live broadcast on Friday evening, with host Alex Jones quipping "you couldn't make that up" as the show continued.
Alarm Interrupts Live Broadcast
Alex Jones and Roman Kemp were hosting the hour-long special when the alarm sounded off-camera. Jones told viewers: "You couldn't make that up could you. I think it's a fire alarm but we'll continue for you and I'm doing my best to keep a straight face."
The interruption came as millions of people across England and Wales received an emergency alert on their phones from 7pm warning against lighting anything that could spark a wildfire, including barbecues, campfires, and fireworks.
Viewers React on Social Media
Viewers took to social media to share their experiences, with one writing on X: "Blimey! I thought I was the only one who received that alert! #TheOneShow." Another added: "It's a government alert #theoneshow." A third wrote: "WTF woz that nearly had a heart attack then it’s started going off on #TheOneShow too."
The special featured former hosts Matt Baker and Christine Lampard, as well as a film from original presenter Adrian Chiles. The programme first aired in 2006 as a four-week trial with Adrian and Nadia Sawalha hosting.
Jones Reflects on Show's Success
Jones, who has hosted for 16 years, previously said: "I can't believe it. Ultimately, it's not about us who host it. The show itself is an institution, and it's really found a way into people's hearts. Especially since the pandemic I think, it's become part of Britain's daily routine."
