The psychological thriller The Girlfriend, starring Robin Wright as a wealthy matriarch, has surged back onto Amazon Prime's top 10 suspense TV shows in the UK, currently sitting at number ten.
Plot and cast
Released on September 10, 2025, the series follows Laura (Robin Wright), whose son Danny (Laurie Davidson) brings home his new girlfriend Cherry (Olivia Cooke). Laura immediately suspects Cherry of having a hidden agenda. The story unfolds as both women engage in a manipulative tug-of-war over Danny.
Based on Michelle Frances's 2017 psychological thriller novel, the drama is set in north London and features opulent houses, swimming pools and gardens.
Critical reception
The show holds an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Variety described it as 'a shocking and twisted story about manipulation, control and jealousy,' adding: 'The series is a wild, thrilling ride from its opening scene until its unsettling conclusion.'
The Guardian called it 'a brilliantly slippery beast of a drama,' while The Times labelled it 'addictive,' writing: 'A guilty pleasure? Probably. A tiny bit far-fetched? Perhaps. With a sprinkling of bonkers, sir? If you must. One thing is for absolute sure, you simply can’t take your eyes off this thing.'
Mother-son dynamic
Laurie Davidson, who plays Danny, spoke about the uncomfortably close mother-son relationship. 'I think people definitely will [see it as too close], and I wouldn’t defend it for them. I think that’s great,' he said at the London premiere. 'I think in this country, it’s very unusual.' He added: 'I think there are other places in Europe, maybe, where mothers and sons do have that intimacy. For them, it wouldn’t even register that it was in any way sexual or Freudian.'
The Girlfriend is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
