Teyana Taylor has revealed she is urging director Paul Thomas Anderson to create a sequel to One Battle After Another, focusing on her character Perfidia Beverly Hills. The 35-year-old singer and actor, who earned an Oscar nomination for the role, described the discussions as “very, very real”.
Speaking to IndieWire, Taylor said: “I am currently begging [Anderson] to give us that. I’m begging him to give us that.” She added that she has been making jokes with the director about exploring what her character did during the film’s 16-year time jump.
The film follows a revolutionary group, French 75, battling a corrupt military officer played by Sean Penn. Taylor’s character betrays the group and abandons her partner, Pat (Leonardo DiCaprio), and daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti). Taylor expressed interest in seeing scenes between Perfidia and Willa, saying: “When Willa walked out the door… I love that it’s still hopeful, and it’s room for a little part two in there somewhere.”
One Battle After Another has received 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Supporting Actress for Taylor. It won four Golden Globes, including Best Supporting Actress and Best Motion Picture, and six BAFTA Film Awards. Taylor faces competition from Wunmi Mosaku, Amy Madigan, Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas in her Oscar category.
Taylor recently hosted Saturday Night Live, where she revealed she learned about her Oscar nomination while having a bald cap fitted for a sketch. She said: “I found out the way every little girl wants to find out… getting fitted for a bald cap next to Mikey Day.” In a statement, she described the nomination as a “fairytale ending”.
