Illumination and Universal's Super Mario Galaxy Movie has broken multiple box office records, earning $372.5 million worldwide in its opening weekend. This makes it the second highest-grossing film in the Nintendo plumber franchise, behind 2023's Super Mario Bros which took $387.8 million.
The sequel earned $182.4 million overseas across 80 territories, with screenings in more than 23,500 locations and 54,000 screens. In the United States and Canada, the film grossed $190 million over the Wednesday to Easter Sunday period, including $130.9 million from Friday to Sunday.
Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore, said the franchise operates in a galaxy of its own in terms of box office potential, capitalising on beloved IP and the goodwill generated by the 2023 film. He predicted the film would level up the box office throughout April.
The film's performance marks the biggest box office opening ever for a movie about plumbers who are brothers.
