Sue Devaney's Dramatic Transformation for Television Role

Coronation Street actress Sue Devaney is no stranger to committing fully to her roles, as evidenced by a past transformation where she shaved her head, leaving her almost unrecognisable from her iconic soap character.

Best known for her fabulous fashion and signature hairstyle as Debbie Webster on the long-running ITV soap, Devaney's appearance with a shaved head presents a striking contrast. She first joined Coronation Street in 1984, playing Debbie, the sister of Kevin Webster, portrayed by Michael Le Vell.

After leaving the show a year later, Devaney made a triumphant return to the cobbles in 2019, where Debbie has since become a firm favourite with viewers. However, the character has faced significant turmoil recently.

Debbie Webster's Turbulent Storyline on Coronation Street

Over the past year, Debbie's world has been turned upside down. Her brother Kevin was diagnosed with cancer, and she herself received a diagnosis of young-onset vascular dementia. Adding to her woes, this month, Debbie was sent to prison after pleading guilty to dangerous driving and causing the death of local vicar Billy Mayhew, played by Daniel Brocklebank.

In a dramatic twist, Debbie is actually taking the blame for her secret son, Carl, portrayed by Jonathan Howard. She fell pregnant with him after a one-night stand at age seventeen, and he grew up believing she was his sister. The crooked Carl is now manipulating Debbie for money while secretly planning to destroy her beloved business, the Chariot Square Hotel.

Sue Devaney's Extensive Television Career

Beyond Coronation Street, Sue Devaney has built an impressive career spanning decades, appearing in numerous popular TV shows. Her credits include The Bill, The Royal, Heartbeat, Casualty, Shameless, Common As Muck, and the children's drama Jonny Briggs.

However, it was her role in the 1989 Channel 4 drama The Real Eddy English that required the most drastic physical change. Devaney played a skinhead gravedigger named Mad B**tard, which necessitated shaving all her hair off for authenticity.

The Lengths Taken for Artistic Authenticity

In a recent interview with Shaz Ighodaro, Devaney detailed the extensive preparations for the role. She explained, "I played a skinhead gravedigger called Mad B**tard and she lived on an allotment. Obviously, I had to physically shave all my hair. Because she was a gravedigger I had to cut my nails really short and put dirt under my nails and stuff."

This commitment highlights Devaney's dedication to her craft, showcasing her willingness to undergo significant transformations to bring characters to life. Her shaved head look remains a memorable part of her diverse acting portfolio, contrasting sharply with her current role on Coronation Street.

Coronation Street continues to air Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, where fans can follow Debbie Webster's ongoing storyline amidst the drama of Weatherfield.
