The Irishman, a crime epic starring Liverpool actor Stephen Graham, is now available to stream on Netflix. The 2019 film, also known as I Heard You Paint Houses, follows Frank Sheeran, a hitman for the Irish American mafia.
Plot and Cast
Set in 1950s Philadelphia, Robert De Niro stars as Sheeran, a World War II veteran who rises through the ranks of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, a union with mafia ties. The story traces his transformation from delivery driver to hitman and his role as bodyguard to union leader Jimmy Hoffa.
Graham plays Anthony "Tony Pro" Provenzano, an associate of Hoffa. The cast also includes Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Ray Romano, Anna Paquin, and Harvey Keitel.
Behind the Scenes and Reception
Directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Steven Zaillian, the film is based on Charles Brandt's novel. It premiered at the 57th New York Film Festival and was named Best Film of 2019 by the National Board of Review. It also received ten Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.
The Irishman has been available on Netflix since 2019 and remains streaming now. Despite its digital release, it later received a Blu-ray edition from the Criterion Collection.
