Owen Cooper, a 15-year-old from the UK, has secured the lead role in the BBC drama 'Adolescence' despite having no prior acting experience. He portrays Jamie Miller, a teenager accused of murdering a female classmate. The role was chosen from over 500 auditionees, with Cooper ultimately standing out to the show's star and co-creator, Stephen Graham.
Graham explained the casting process on Heart Radio's Breakfast Show, revealing that the production team sought a fresh face unfamiliar with traditional acting methods. 'We didn't want anyone who had a lot of experience,' he said. Cooper was 13 when filming took place two years ago, and Graham described him as having a 'unique ability' similar to that of Jodie Comer.
The drama was filmed using a one-take-per-episode approach, adding to the challenge for the young actor. Graham noted that the other four finalists were offered different parts due to their talent, but Cooper's performance was exceptional. He added that their production companies aim to create opportunities for working-class young people who might not normally have such chances.
Graham also reflected on his role in launching Jodie Comer's career, having urged his agent to sign her after recognising her talent. 'She is phenomenal,' he said, drawing parallels to Cooper's potential. 'Adolescence' is set to air on the BBC, with Cooper's performance already generating significant interest.
