Sky News presenter Sophy Ridge was left embarrassed after her guest corrected her live on air for a mistake during Tuesday's broadcast. The 41-year-old host was discussing the Conservatives' plans for a £10billion national missile and drone defence system called Britannia Shield when she introduced former Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell.
Guest corrects host's mistake
Ridge introduced McDonnell as "Lord John McDonnell", prompting the politician to respond: "I hope you didn't call me Lord John McDonnel then..." The host then buried her head in her hands and apologised, admitting: "I did, I'm sorry, I actually did. I tried to correct my mistake, I've knighted you by mistake."
McDonnell laughed off the blunder before Ridge asked: "Would you accept it if you were offered it, by the way?" He replied: "Of course not, I want to abolish the House of Lords!"
Defence system discussion
The discussion centred on the proposed Britannia Shield, modelled on Israel's Iron Dome, which would provide protection to the UK, its sovereign territories and overseas bases. The exchange was shared on social media by journalist Saul Staniforth, showing the moment McDonnell challenged Ridge's introduction.
The programme continued after the awkward moment, with the conversation moving on to the merits of the proposed defence spending.
