Simon Cowell has unveiled two new projects, with his Netflix docuseries being described as 'a big two fingers up to ITV' following the cancellation of The X Factor. The 66-year-old music mogul will front 'Simon Cowell: The Next Act', a six-episode series charting his search for Britain's next big band, alongside a new judging panel show titled 'Who's In The Band'.
The latter will see Cowell joined by Spice Girl Mel B and Jonas Brothers singer Joe Jonas, with presenter Rei Ami, 30, hosting. Former TV presenter turned producer Richard Bacon said the format 'will be popular with teenagers and young adults'. Meanwhile, Netflix executives reportedly view Cowell's involvement as 'a power move for the network'.
A source close to Cowell denied any rivalry with ITV, insisting: 'There’s no rivalry nor residual issue – Simon’s focus is entirely on new formats and discovering talent.' However, another source claimed: 'Success on Netflix would be priceless retribution against ITV for the way The X Factor came to a close.' The X Factor, which launched One Direction and Little Mix, was scrapped in 2021 after nearly 20 years.
Cowell continues to work with ITV on 'Britain's Got Talent', which remains a staple after 18 years. His latest ventures, however, have sparked excitement in television circles. The announcements come after Cowell missed two days of BGT auditions following a fall down steps, with Stacey Solomon temporarily filling in. He later appeared with a visible graze on his forehead.
