The BBC has confirmed that Silent Witness will return for a 30th series, with filming currently under way. The announcement follows the conclusion of series 29, which aired last month and saw the long-running crime drama relocate from London to Birmingham for the first time.
Emilia Fox and David Caves will reprise their roles as Dr Nikki Alexander and Jack Hodgson, alongside Maggie Steed and Fran Mills as Harriet and Kit. The most recent series followed the team as they adjusted to their new base at the Sir William Bowman Centre of Excellence in Birmingham.
Series 29 saw Jack Hodgson struggle with his new surroundings, leading to speculation that he might leave the show. His character was arrested after becoming increasingly affected by his work, but in the penultimate episode he appeared to confirm his future, stating: "Someone once said life is understood backwards but lived forwards. I want to be there... for all of it. I'm ready."
Emilia Fox, who has appeared in the programme since its inception, shared a behind-the-scenes update on social media. In a video posted on the official BBC Silent Witness channels, she thanked viewers for watching series 29 and said: "We look forward to seeing you on series 30. Which we are filming now."
Fans have responded enthusiastically, with one commenting: "Already counting down to S30. S29 was incredible as always."
