The final episode, 'Exeunt', saw the detective duo part ways after a dark twist: Thursday killed a biker to protect his son Sam, and Morse confronted him. Forced to go undercover or face death, Thursday left Morse behind, cementing the character's lifelong loneliness.
Evans said he hoped the series would end with Morse's isolation sealed, making it a natural starting point for the later Inspector Morse series set in 1987. He praised co-star Roger Allam, noting they were both clear on the emotional beats during their final scenes filmed on separate days.
Fans were heartbroken by a scene where Morse imagined kissing Joan Thursday (Sara Vickers), only for it to be revealed as a fantasy. Many took to social media to express sadness over the tease and the duo's ultimate separation.
