Shameless premiered in 2004 and aired its final episode 13 years ago, in 2013. Created by Paul Abbott, the dark comedy was set on the fictitious Chatsworth estate in Manchester and offered a raw, humorous and often shocking portrait of working-class life. It became one of the biggest UK programmes of all time and inspired a US remake that is now among the most streamed shows in the world, while also launching several acting careers.
David Threlfall: Frank Gallagher
Burnage-born David Threlfall appeared in every season as the ever-inebriated Frank Gallagher and also directed several episodes. Before Shameless, he won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 1980 for Nicholas Nickleby and played Friedrich Kritzinger in the BBC/HBO drama Conspiracy. His film credits include Patriot Games, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Nowhere Boy.
After the show ended, Threlfall played Tommy Cooper in ITV's Tommy Cooper: Not Like That, Like This, Noah in The Ark, DCS David Baker in Code of a Killer, Priam in Troy: Fall of a City and a grandfather in COVID-era mini-series Isolation Stories. More recent roles include Dodger, Passenger, Funny Woman, The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin and Nightsleeper. Last year he played Brian Mitchell in BBC film Unforgivable and appeared with Matt Smith in Sky's The Death of Bunny Munro.
Away from acting, Threlfall has been married to Bosnian actress Brana Bajic since 1995. The couple met in 1994 while working on The Count of Monte Cristo at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre and have two children.
Anne-Marie Duff: Fiona Gallagher
Anne-Marie Duff was the heart of the show as Fiona Gallagher, but left after the second series and did not return until the final season. Her exit storyline saw Fiona leave with Steve McBride, played by James McAvoy. Duff first rose to fame in 2002's The Magdalene Sisters and had a minor role in Holby City. In 2005 she played Queen Elizabeth I in BBC mini-series The Virgin Queen, earning a BAFTA nomination; the series also starred Tom Hardy.
Her film work includes Notes on a Scandal, Garage, Is Anybody There?, The Last Station, Nowhere Boy, Before I Go to Sleep and Suffragette. On TV she starred in Parade's End, From Darkness, Murder, Watership Down and His Dark Materials, the latter two reuniting her with James McAvoy. Duff and McAvoy married in 2006 and had a son together before announcing their divorce in 2016. She was appointed OBE in the 2025 New Year Honours for services to drama.
In 2020 Duff joined Netflix's Sex Education as the mother of Emma Mackey's character, a woman struggling with heroin addiction. In 2023 she won the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Grace Williams in Apple TV's Bad Sisters.
Jody Latham: Lip Gallagher
Jody Latham also left Shameless early, with Lip departing in the fifth season and returning only for the final run. His biggest role away from the estate was Calum McKenzie in ITV's The Fixer, which ran for two series. The show followed an ex-British Special Forces soldier, played by Andrew Buchan, who becomes a government-backed assassin after being arrested for killing his aunt and uncle.
The Burnley actor made brief appearances in The Tudors, EastEnders, Waterloo Road, Hollyoaks and Holby City. His last acting credit to date is 2017 Channel 4 crime drama No Offence. Latham now works in the family construction business, having previously founded a company selling botox and dermal fillers.
Gerard Kearns: Ian Gallagher
Ian Gallagher was known for his affair with married corner shop owner Kash Karib, played by Chris Bisson. After learning he was not Frank's son, Ian left in season seven following the accidental death of Joe Pritchard (Ben Batt). While on Shameless, Gerard Kearns also appeared in Doctors, Foyle's War, The Commander and Red Riding.
He has since featured in The Mark of Cain and Trespass Against Us, the latter with Michael Fassbender, and on TV played Halig in The Last Kingdom, Pravik in Chernobyl and Gary Cobb in The Day of the Jackal. Earlier this year he appeared in Waiting for the Out, based on The Life Inside. Kearns married his partner Sarah in December 2017, and the couple have two sons, Aiden and James.
Rebecca Ryan: Debbie Gallagher
Fans were upset when Debbie left Chatsworth to join the army in series six. Like Fiona, Debbie had been left with maternal responsibilities because Frank was not up to the task. After leaving Shameless, Rebecca Ryan spent two years playing Vicki MacDonald in Waterloo Road and also appeared in Casualty, Doctors and Holby City.
In 2021 the Manchester-born actress joined Coronation Street as Underworld PA Lydia Chambers, causing trouble for Sarah Platt and Adam Barlow, including pushing Adam off a balcony, before leaving the soap in 2022. Ryan married Dan Acraman on 24 September 2022, and the couple share daughters Aurora and Oriana.
Maxine Peake: Veronica Fisher
Bolton's Maxine Peake was a fan favourite as Veronica Fisher, the Gallaghers' neighbour and Fiona's best friend. She and husband Kev Ball left Chatsworth in season four, and were said to have been arrested while trying to buy a baby from a Romanian orphanage. Peake was also known for Dinnerladies, and her later projects include Silk, The Village, Anne, Say Nothing and the Black Mirror episode Metalhead. Her films include The Theory of Everything, Funny Cow, Wendell & Wild and I Swear.
Peake has spoken openly about her fertility struggles with partner Pawlo Wintoniuk, including failed IVF attempts and miscarriages. Speaking on BBC Radio 4, she said: "I had three rounds but that was enough for me, I was done. It was so difficult physically and emotionally." She added: "You are absolutely pumped full of hormones, you're tired, and I was working at the same time… You don't have that luxury of taking time off. You have to find places where you can inject when you're on a night shoot. In a grubby portable toilet, panicking that you're going to infect yourself."
Dean Lennox Kelly: Kev Ball
Whereas Veronica never returned, Dean Lennox Kelly came back as Kev Ball in season eight. In the show's 100th episode, Kev confirmed that he and Veronica were still married and living in London. After leaving, Kelly played William Shakespeare in a 2007 episode of Doctor Who, and went on to appear in The Invisibles, Married Single Other, Frankie and Jamestown.
More recently he played Curtis Plum in Brassic and appeared on The 1% Club's Soccer Aid Special. He shares two children with his wife Eugenie, a folk singer and writer.
Maggie O'Neill: Sheila Jackson
Maggie O'Neill played Frank's girlfriend Sheila Jackson in the early years. Sheila had suffered domestic abuse, leaving her with agoraphobia and anxiety. Her exit saw her leave Frank with their twins, Nigel and Delia, after discovering he had not divorced his former wife Monica (Annabelle Apsion).
Before Shameless, O'Neill was best known for Gorillas in the Mist and the music video for Simply Red's Holding Back the Years. She went on to play Suzy Branning in EastEnders in 2008, leaving after six months, and later had roles in New Tricks, Inspector George Gently, Death in Paradise, Midsomer Murders, Call the Midwife, Two Doors Down and Casualty.
Samantha Siddall: Mandy Maguire
Mandy Maguire was the only daughter of the Maguires, the Gallaghers' neighbours, and the mother of Lip's daughter Katie. Samantha Siddall's character was killed off in a gas explosion at the end of series six, a blast orchestrated by Maureen Tudor (Julia Ford) as revenge on Mandy's father Paddy (Sean Gilder).
Siddall has made only a handful of appearances since leaving Shameless, with roles in episodes of Casualty, Terri Carmichael, Doctors and Hollyoaks.
Rebecca Atkinson: Karen Maguire
Karen, Sheila's wayward daughter, famously carried out a risqué act with Lip and Ian beneath the kitchen table before embarking on a taboo romance with Frank. She eventually found stability and took charge of The Jockey pub with her husband Jamie Maguire (Aaron McCusker), and was one of few characters to appear in every series.
After Shameless, Rebecca Atkinson appeared in River City, Flatmates and Coronation Street, where she played prison guard Mandy Waring, who began a relationship with inmate Rob Donovan (Marc Baylis). In another Shameless connection, Atkinson married her co-star Ben Batt, who played Joe Pritchard, last year. The couple have a son, Jack, born in 2016.
James McAvoy: Steve McBride
The biggest star to emerge from Shameless is James McAvoy, who played Steve McBride and left the series at the end of the second series alongside Anne-Marie Duff, his future wife. In 2005 he played Mr Tumnus in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, followed by The Last King of Scotland, Atonement and Wanted.
McAvoy is perhaps best known to film fans as Charles Xavier in the X-Men reboot series, taking over the role made famous by Patrick Stewart. He also played a man with 23 dissociative identities in M. Night Shyamalan's Split, led It Chapter Two and starred as Lord Asriel in the BBC fantasy series His Dark Materials from 2019 to 2022.
