Secret Cinema is a step closer to opening its first permanent venue in London after receiving planning permission from Greenwich Council. The immersive cinema company will build a 1,500-seat auditorium and event space on the Greenwich Peninsula, with the licence to operate for up to 10 years.
Premises licence application
The company has now applied for a premises licence to allow the venue to open and sell alcohol until 11.30pm on weekdays and midnight on weekends. The application will be considered by Greenwich Council's Licensing Sub-Committee B on August 11.
Immersive productions
Since 2007, Secret Cinema has staged immersive film productions across London, blending live theatre, themed environments, and movie screenings. Current productions include Grease The Immersive Movie Musical at Battersea Park until mid-September, with past shows including Guardians of the Galaxy at Wembley in 2022 and Stranger Things in Canning Town in 2019.
New venue details
The new venue will be located next to the Troubadour Theatre, currently under construction, which will be the capital's largest theatre with 3,000 seats. Secret Cinema described the project as a flexible, state-of-the-art venue that could host a series of immersive productions based on famous film titles.
Two local residents have objected to the premises licence application, citing concerns about late-night noise and disturbance to nearby residents.
