Sally Nugent has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Naga Munchetty on BBC Breakfast, but some argue a fresh face like Steph McGovern would be a better choice.
A missed opportunity
Naga Munchetty is slated to leave BBC Breakfast towards the start of 2027. While the broadcaster has yet to confirm anything, Sally Nugent is reportedly the top candidate. Sally is a highly-skilled journalist who joined Breakfast in 2011, and she is known for her sharp interviewing style, notably with Nigel Farage.
However, Sally already has a leading role on the show, and simply filling Naga's slot may be a missed opportunity to refresh the programme. After 12 years of Naga and Charlie Stayt as the main presenters, now feels like the right time for new energy.
BBC under scrutiny
The BBC has faced accusations of bias in reporting, and recent reports of Naga receiving "special treatment" at her new Radio 5 Live role have added to criticism. Rachel Burden, who has presented 5 Live Breakfast for 15 years, has been relegated to a quieter slot to accommodate Naga.
Critics argue the BBC is reshuffling the same employees rather than introducing new faces. Viewers have also slammed the show as "boring" on social media.
A curveball pick
One suggestion for Naga's replacement is Steph McGovern, who previously worked on Breakfast as a business presenter. After leaving in 2019, she proved she can lead a daytime show with charisma and relatability during her three-year run on Steph's Packed Lunch.
Steph's Packed Lunch has since been cancelled, but her appeal remains. The BBC could inject new life into Breakfast by stepping out of its routines and giving other capable journalists a chance.
