Rupert Everett has moved to clarify that he was not “fired” from the hit Netflix series Emily in Paris, after reports suggested he had claimed otherwise. The British actor, known for roles in My Best Friend’s Wedding and An Ideal Husband, played Italian fashion designer Giorgio Barbieri in the show’s fourth season.
Earlier this week, media reports including Vanity Fair quoted Everett as saying at an event in Italy that his failure to return to the show was “a tragedy” and that he had been dismissed. “I was in bed for two weeks because I couldn’t get over it,” he was reported to have said.
However, in a statement to The Independent, Everett set the record straight: “In reference to the recent articles about me and the Netflix series Emily in Paris, I would like to confirm that I was never fired from the show. I was talking to a group of acting students — in my shaky Italian — at a festival in the south of Italy, and it all got a little lost in translation!”
Everett first rose to fame in the play and film adaptation of Another Country, and his career includes standout performances in the 1994 romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding and the Shrek franchise. Meanwhile, another Emily in Paris star, Camille Razat, who played Emily’s “frenemy” Camille, has confirmed she will not return for season five. Razat said, “After an incredible journey, I’ve made the decision to step away.” Her departure coincides with the news that the upcoming series will be set in Rome, a move creator Darren Star said was designed to “stay ahead of the audience”.
