Robson Green returns in Channel 5 thriller The Game series 2

Robson Green, best known for playing Detective Geordie Keating in Grantchester, is returning to television in a very different role as Channel 5 brings back its psychological thriller The Game for a second series.

Green will reprise his role as serial killer Patrick Harbottle, a calculating murderer whose presence continues to haunt former detective Huw Miller, played by Jason Watkins.

What happens in series 2

The new series picks up a year after the dramatic events of the first instalment, with Huw attempting to rebuild his life after surviving a brutal attack. Hoping to leave the trauma behind, Huw and his wife Alice, played by Sunetra Sarker, head to an isolated house by the sea. But their attempt at a fresh start quickly becomes complicated. Although Patrick is behind bars, Huw discovers that putting the past behind him may be far easier said than done.

The first series established the dangerous connection between the two men, with Patrick repeatedly finding ways to get inside Huw's head. Green has previously teased Patrick's return, suggesting the character will continue to manipulate events from behind prison walls.

Cast and new additions

Green and Watkins are joined by returning cast members including Sunetra Sarker as Alice Miller, Indy Lewis as Margot Miller and Amber James as DS Jenny Atkins. The second series will also introduce new characters, with Sonny Ashbourne Serkis, Tanya Franks, Dominic Rowan, Amanda Bright, Richard Pepple, Carl Rice and Connor Calland joining the cast.

Speaking about his return, Green said: “Stepping back into the world of The Game for series two is an exciting challenge. Just when you thought it was over, Patrick is back pulling strings with a vengeance. 5 audiences are in for another brilliant ride.”

Watkins added: “I cannot wait to get started on The Game S2. Huw has been through the mill and there’s no let-up this series. I’m excited to get my teeth into what’s ahead for him.”

When does The Game series 2 air?

The new run will consist of four episodes, continuing the dark and unsettling story established in the first series. Channel 5 has confirmed that The Game will return for a second series on Tuesday 1st September at 9pm on 5.
