In Ride Or Die, Hannah Waddingham plays Whiptail, a deadly assassin for over two decades whose recent jobs have drawn unwanted attention. Octavia Spencer portrays Debbie, her best friend who knows Whiptail only as Judith, a forensic accountant. Debbie is the wife of politician David (Jamie Parker), who is on track to become the next prime minister.
A chaotic turn of events
Whiptail's boss Sam (Calam Lynch) confronts her about her reckless methods, suggesting retirement due to her age. Whiptail reacts by destroying her employer's headquarters and confronting The Director (Bill Nighy). She eventually agrees to kill gangland criminal Billy Donovan (Ed Skrein) at a charity gala. Meanwhile, David announces he wants a divorce from Debbie. At the gala, Whiptail fails to poison Billy, and a bloodbath ensues, leaving David dead. A taunting postcard is left for Whiptail, forcing her to protect a drunk Debbie and uncover the truth.
Chemistry and comedy
The series thrives on the chemistry between Waddingham and Spencer, who convincingly portray long-time middle-aged friends. Their bond includes shared jokes and deep understanding. When Debbie learns Judith's secret, her primary concern is the betrayal, not the violence. The show uses the characters' ages not as a punchline but to drive the plot and offer commentary on women's midlife experiences.
Action and heart
Ride Or Die features action sequences where Waddingham convincingly portrays a physical threat. The series balances laughs, tender moments, and a deepening friendship between the leads. It offers a rare opportunity for two fiftysomething actors to play dynamic, dramatic roles that resonate with viewers navigating midlife. The show is available on Prime Video now.
