Richard Osman has announced that the film adaptation of his bestselling novel, The Thursday Murder Club, will have a limited cinema release in the UK before arriving on Netflix. The film, starring Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie, follows a group of elderly amateur sleuths in a retirement home who uncover a murder case.
Filming for the adaptation began in 2024, directed by Chris Columbus. Osman shared the update on Instagram, stating that Netflix responded to public demand for a theatrical release. The film will be in UK cinemas from August 22 and available on Netflix from August 28, with a runtime of nearly two hours.
The cast includes Dame Helen Mirren as ex-spy Elizabeth Best, Celia Imrie as ex-nurse Joyce Meadowcroft, Pierce Brosnan as ex-union activist Ron Ritchie, and Sir Ben Kingsley as ex-psychiatrist Ibrahim Arif. David Tennant also appears as Ian Ventham, owner of the retirement village Coopers Chase.
The official trailer, released in May, shows Elizabeth investigating a cold case from 1973. Fans have expressed excitement online, praising the cast and the adaptation of the beloved book series.
