The fourth season draws from the thirteenth novel, Gone Tomorrow, with the remaining episodes being released weekly. Actor Ritchson spoke to Collider in August 2026 about the harrowing case in season 4, saying it is "the first time we're seeing him confounded by a case that he wants so badly to unravel and understand, and it's not something that he has an intimate connection with".
He added: "It's not his family, it's not his adoptive family, and so this is confounding in a lot of ways. Why is he so invested, and why is it so hard for him to either step back from or figure out? He also feels responsible for what happened. He was trying to intervene and misread the situation. I think there's also this sense of indebtedness to make it right, beyond his curiosity. It's like a perfect storm."
