The upcoming Prime Video adaptation of Tomb Raider, masterminded by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, has added a touch of real-life royalty to its already impressive ensemble. The latest star to join the adventure is August Wittgenstein, a 44-year-old member of the princely House of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg.
From German Royalty to Hollywood Adventurer
August Wittgenstein is set to play an adventurer named Lukas opposite Sophie Turner's Lara Croft. This marks his most high-profile role to date, elevating a career that began in German-language short films and television back in 2008. Born into nobility, Wittgenstein is the son of Countess Yvonne Wachtmeister af Johannishus, a Swedish noble. He and his sisters grew up bilingual, speaking both German and Swedish.
Despite his aristocratic background, Wittgenstein pursued acting with determination. He condensed his full name, Prince August Fredrik zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, to August Wittgenstein to forge his own path in the film industry. His training was completed at the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
UK audiences may recognise him from his role in Netflix's The Crown, where he played Grand Duke Georg Donatus of Hesse, a relative of Prince Philip, in a series two flashback. His filmography also includes Ron Howard's thriller Angels & Demons and the Swedish drama Avalon.
A Supportive Partnership and a Stellar Cast
In his personal life, Wittgenstein found a strong supporter in his wife, psychologist Mia Rohla, whom he married in 2022. The couple had a stunning reception at Wittgenstein Castle. He has credited Mia, a cognitive behavioural therapist, with providing invaluable insights for his roles. "She provides me with a whole treasure trove of information," he shared in a recent interview, explaining how he consults her on character reactions.
Wittgenstein's casting adds to a formidable line-up for the Tomb Raider series. He joins previously announced acting royalty including Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, and Celia Imrie. The series, which was officially confirmed with Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in September last year, is one of Prime Video's most ambitious projects.
Stepping into Iconic Boots
Sophie Turner has spoken openly about the daunting task of taking on a role made famous by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander on the big screen. "They're massive shoes to fill," Turner admitted, but expressed confidence in having Phoebe Waller-Bridge at the helm as creator, writer, and executive producer.
Inspired by the legendary video game franchise, the series will follow the daring exploits of archaeologist and explorer Lara Croft. With a heavyweight production team and a cast that now blends established stars with intriguing new talent like Prince August Wittgenstein, the Tomb Raider series is shaping up to be a must-watch event for global audiences.
