Prime Video fans are 'jumping ship' on the new romance drama 'Every Year After' for a 'messed up' reason. The brand new adaptation has left fans of the original book frustrated.
Fans Threaten to 'Switch Off'
Every Year After viewers have issued the same complaint as they threaten to 'switch off' the new Prime Video show. Adapted from Carley Fortune's Every Summer After novel, Season 1 is available to binge watch now. It follows 28-year-old obituary writer Percy Fraser (played by Sadie Soverall) as she is forced to confront her complicated past.
Percy grew up spending her summers in the lake town of Barry's Bay, where she befriended brothers Sam (Matt Cornett) and Charlie (Michael Bradway). The teen later sparked a romance with Sam, which was going well until she unexpectedly left the Bay and refused to return. Viewers slowly learn the dark truth behind Percy's departure as the show unfolds.
Book Fans Disappointed
While some fans are hooked on the new drama, those who read its source material have been left disappointed. Taking to Reddit, one viewer confessed they were on the verge of giving up on the series just three episodes in.
'I'm considering jumping ship and I'm on episode 3. I'm MAD,' they shared. The post went on: 'There are just too many shallow and pointless things being thrown at something that could have been simply done on a plot/book that was FLAWLESS. I so wish this was just a movie instead. I devoured the book and I’m SO painfully bored and annoyed with the show.'
Others agreed in the comments section, with a disgruntled reader adding: 'So many totally unnecessary changes… I’m actually angry watching it. So much potential. I feel bad for the actors. Esp after Off Campus just did so well.'
Someone else chimed in: 'Same same same. I really loved the book and I thought the plot and characters were so good. When I saw it was coming on Amazon after Off Campus I was thrilled. I am through the first 6 episodes and its been really painful to watch them butcher this.'
Major Differences from the Book
The new adaptation doesn't follow Fortune's book to the letter. One major difference is the way Sam discovers that Percy slept with his brother. In the show, Percy reveals the truth when she returns to Barry's Bay a decade after disappearing. But Charlie is actually the one who confesses in the book, and his admission comes years before Percy returns to the Bay.
Mixed Reactions
Although there's some frustration among viewers, some have been completely won over. 'Having read the book, I still found the show to be a delightful summer must-watch and enjoyed every moment of it,' said one review. A second fan praised: 'Such a dreamy and expansive ode to Percy and Sam’s story. Loved every second!'
Every Year After is streaming now on Prime Video.
