Sky has released its new supernatural thriller Possession as a boxset, featuring a lawyer from Bristol who travels to Jamaica to challenge an inheritance claim. The series, which dropped on August 6, stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Claudia, a hotshot lawyer tasked with investigating a claim filed by a local resident against a wealthy white aristocrat.
Upon arriving in Jamaica, Claudia discovers that the aristocrat's family home, Hope Hill, is the same former plantation that has been haunting her nightmares. As she digs deeper into the case, she uncovers chilling connections between the historical horrors of the plantation and present-day injustices.
Series premise and tone
The show flits between past and present as spirits continue to haunt the former plantation. Sky describes the series as “an ambitious genre-bending series that boldly confronts the enduring legacy of colonialism, marrying shadowy intrigue with the pulsating energy of the Caribbean.”
Main cast and their notable roles
Gugu Mbatha-Raw leads the cast as Claudia, known for her roles in Surface, Marvel's Loki, Belle, Apple TV's The Morning Show, and Doctor Who.
Jonny Lee Miller plays Oliver Connaught, the wealthy aristocrat fighting the inheritance claim. Miller is recognized for playing Sherlock Holmes in Elementary and starring in Trainspotting, Aeon Flux, Hackers, and The Crown.
Sheldon Shepherd, from Better Must Come and Bob Marley: One Love, portrays Cudjoe East, who filed the claim believing he is owed a debt.
Supporting cast
Bel Powley, known for The Morning Show and A Small Light, plays Charlotte. Nadean Rawlins, with credits in Bob Marley: One Love, Sprinter, Get Millie Black, and Going Down, takes on the role of Mercy.
Sean Gilder stars as Tom McKenzie, with roles in Mary & George, Slow Horses, Poldark, Star City, and Silent Witness. Olunike Adeliyi of The Fire Inside and Mike fame plays Patsy Dawkins.
Richard Dillane, from The Crown and Netflix productions, plays Eugene Desfrienes. Diveen Henry, featured in The Day of the Jackal and Manhunt, plays Flora.
Jack Bandeira, from Happy Valley, Black Mirror, and The Gold, plays Kenneth Connaught. Shantol Jackson, a Death in Paradise favorite, rounds out the cast as Sarah, with additional roles in Sprinter and Yardie.
