The British period drama Poldark has landed fully on Netflix, with all five seasons available to stream from start to finish.
Written, created and adapted for television by Debbie Horsfield, Poldark is based on Winston Graham's novel series. The show first aired on BBC One in March 2015 and ran until August 2019, covering the first seven of Graham's twelve books across 43 episodes and five series, all now on Netflix.
What is Poldark about?
Set between 1781 and 1801, the show follows Ross Poldark, a British Army veteran returning home to Cornwall after the American Revolutionary War. He finds his father dead and his estate in ruins, and the series tracks his efforts to rebuild his life and fortune while dealing with love, family and societal relationships.
Aidan Turner stars as Ross Poldark, alongside Eleanor Tomlinson, Heida Reed, Ruby Bentall, Jack Farthing and Luke Norris in the ensemble cast.
Awards and filming locations
Poldark won the Audience Award at the 2016 BAFTA TV Awards and received nominations at the 21st and 22nd National Television Awards, including Best New Drama, Best Period Drama and Best Drama Performance. Aidan Turner took home the Impact Award.
The show was largely filmed across Cornwall, with some scenes shot in Corsham, Wiltshire, and in Frome, Bath and Wells in Somerset. Sets were also built at The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol.
What critics and viewers say
The series holds an average 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes across all five seasons. One reviewer said: "Thankfully...the series delivers immediately on the panoramic scenery and romance that this genre demands: plunging cliffs, green fields, galloping horses and burning glances aplenty."
Another critic praised Turner, saying: "I came to it fresh, never having seen the apparently much-loved 1970s version, and was suitably enchanted by Aidan Turner." A further review called Poldark "juicy, romantic, melodramatic storytelling at its most enjoyable."
Viewers have also shared their enthusiasm. One fan wrote on Rotten Tomatoes: "Poldark has everything I look for in a TV series: great characters, adventure, drama, joy, romance, inspiration, and feel good moments. The acting and the story are not exaggerated like in a soap opera."
All five series of Poldark are streaming on Netflix now.
