Fans of All Creatures Great and Small have been hunting for new period dramas to fill the void since the show last aired in December 2025 with a Christmas special. With season 7 yet to air, viewers are on the lookout for similarly cosy programmes to tide them over until the drama returns.
One show in particular has emerged as the perfect substitute, with devoted viewers declaring it a "masterpiece" of the genre. It all started when a fan took to Facebook to seek recommendations after finishing the fourth season. They wrote: "Hello Everyone! Just finished watching the 4th season... Could you please recommend something similar until the new season's release?"
A fellow enthusiast stepped forward to suggest Home Fires, which originally aired on ITV in 2015. They commented: "Has anyone mentioned Home Fires? Such a great show (WWII fiction) in the spirit of these others many of us seem to love (Father Brown, Grantchester, Doc Martin, etc). BUT the show was cancelled, leaving multiple egregious cliffhangers. The creator was smart though; he wrote a series to fill the gaps and flush out the stories."
Home Fires is a period drama centred on the lives of courageous Women's Institute members serving on the Home Front throughout the Second World War. Set in the fictional rural Cheshire village of Great Paxford, the show draws inspiration from Julie Summers' book Jambusters.
The programme's debut series boasts an impressive 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers flocking to the comments section to heap praise. One viewer gushed: "Loved, loved, loved this series!! Just heard they are doing a second season, hurray! Just good, clean TV about regular people dealing with irregular circumstances. Please continue the series..."
A second remarked: "The name being Home Fires on Masterpiece, it doesn't lie about the Masterpiece part." A third observed: "The show follows several women and the challenges they face in supporting the war effort. Some of the story lines are more soap opera than others, but I am enjoying every minute."
