Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders, has explained why Paul Anderson does not appear in the new film The Immortal Man, following fan backlash over a scene described as “confusing” and “disrespectful”. Anderson played Arthur Shelby in the BBC series, but the film reveals that Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) strangled his brother to death after Arthur stole from him while addicted to opium.
The character’s death is shown in a flashback, but Anderson does not portray Arthur; his face is obscured. Knight told The Hollywood Reporter: “The story determines the cast... I knew that Tommy needed to have done something that he couldn’t forgive himself for. Therefore, that’s why the plot went in that particular direction.” He added: “In terms of Paul, all I’ll say is that he’s a fantastic actor.”
Anderson’s absence has been linked to his arrest in January 2024, when he pleaded guilty to possession of crack cocaine, amphetamines, diazepam and pregabalin. Reports said police were called after a pub manager detected crack fumes from a disabled toilet. Anderson’s lawyer argued in court that the actor was “recognised and tried to play up for fans” by slipping into character, leading to “inducements”.
Despite the legal issues, Anderson has since reassured fans about his wellbeing. In February 2024, he shared a photo on Instagram from the set of historical series The Gray House, writing: “Back to business and back on set today... Thank you for all your love and concern to everyone.” He also stated: “I am back don’t you worry about that.”
