The eighth and final season of Outlander has smashed a four-year ratings record for Starz, with its premiere drawing nearly 3 million viewers. The episode, released weekly from March 6, represents a ratings peak not seen in four years for the network.
The Scottish period drama, which first aired in 2014, holds a 91% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Based on Diana Gabaldon's best-selling novels, it follows the epic love story of Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), blending romance, fantasy and time travel in the 18th-century Scottish Highlands.
According to the official synopsis, Claire is a former World War II nurse who finds herself transported to 1743, where she marries Jamie to survive. Critics have long praised the show, with Time Magazine calling it "two period dramas contained in one thrilling show" and The Daily Telegraph describing it as "an epic, gruesome fantasy series told from a female perspective".
Fans have also been vocal in their appreciation. One viewer called it "a sweeping Odyssey", while another said it is "one of the best shows I've ever seen". The series has cultivated a devoted following over the past decade.
Outlander season 8 airs on Starz in the US on Fridays and on MGM+ via Prime Video in the UK on Saturdays.
