Netflix is set to release a new interactive special titled Billionaires' Bunker on Friday, 19 September, created by Alex Pina and Esther Martinez Lobato, the minds behind the hit Spanish drama Money Heist.
The series follows a group of billionaires who retreat to a luxurious underground bunker amid the threat of a global conflict. Tensions rise as an old feud between two families resurfaces, trapping the wealthy with no escape.
Pina revealed to Deadline that the concept originated during the coronavirus pandemic, when he noticed buildings being constructed 13 floors underground. He described the show as 'naughty, witty, and about rich people during an apocalypse', adding that the confined setting allows characters to be pushed to extremes.
While Billionaires' Bunker is not directly connected to Money Heist, fans have speculated about a link due to the shared creators. Pina has produced several Netflix series, including the Money Heist spin-off Berlin and the English-language drama White Lines.
Pina believes the success of Money Heist has paved the way for non-English shows to compete globally. 'I think we can all compete with the English-speaking shows,' he said. 'I feel that we absolutely belong to this universe like any other.'
