Fans of Grey's Anatomy are expressing confusion over the Texas setting of the medical franchise's newly announced spin-off. ABC has greenlit an untitled one-hour offshoot centered on a team at a West Texas rural medical center, described as "the last chance for care before miles of nowhere," according to Variety. The show is expected to premiere during the 2026-2027 broadcast season.
Production Details
Original Grey's Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo will executive produce alongside series creator Shonda Rhimes and Meg Marinis, who became showrunner in 2024. Marinis expressed excitement about expanding the universe, stating, "This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion, and connection audiences have loved from Grey's for more than two decades — all set in my home state of Texas."
Fan Reactions
The Texas location has left many fans puzzled, as the state has little connection to the main series, which is set in Seattle. On social media, one fan asked, "In Texas?? Why there, though?" Another wondered, "Who is even in Texas?" Some speculated about potential character crossovers, recalling that Dr. Stephanie Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) went to a Texas burn unit after a hospital explosion in season 13, and Dr. Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) left for a pediatrics fellowship in San Antonio. However, it remains unclear if or how the spin-off will connect to the original series.
Grey's Anatomy, which debuted in 2005, was renewed for season 23 in March. The franchise previously spawned spin-offs Private Practice, Station 19, and Grey's Anatomy: B-Team.
