Netflix has quietly scrapped its documentary series 'Wrestlers' after just one season, despite a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series, which aired in late 2023, offered an intimate behind-the-scenes look at Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), a professional wrestling promotion owned by former WWE star Al Snow.
Al Snow confirmed to Metro that Netflix had an option for a second season until September 2024 but chose not to take it. 'It just quietly moved on,' he said, noting that talks had taken place but the option lapsed without fanfare. Snow hinted that the series could potentially be revived with a different streaming service, as OVW retains the rights to produce a second season elsewhere.
The cancellation comes as Netflix launched 'WWE Unreal' this week, another documentary series offering an intimate look at the global wrestling giant. Filmmaker Greg Whitely, who created 'Wrestlers', has since moved on to projects such as a series on the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.
OVW has recently been acquired by UK-based sports agency Morley Sports Management (MSM), whose CEO Rob Edwards announced a new initiative to transition athletes from football, rugby and other sports into wrestling. Snow cautioned, however, that many athletes underestimate the physical demands of professional wrestling.
Fans of 'Wrestlers' expressed disappointment at the news on Google Reviews, with one calling it 'an absolute gem of a series' and another praising its 'amazingly intimate portrayals'. The show was lauded for its authenticity and appeal to both wrestling enthusiasts and general audiences.
