Netflix has confirmed the cast for its upcoming limited series adaptation of Edith Wharton's classic novel, The Age of Innocence. The period drama is set in Gilded Age New York and explores themes of forbidden love and societal duty.
The series will star Camila Morrone, known for Daisy Jones & The Six, as Ellen Olenska; Kristine Froseth from The Buccaneers as May Welland; and Ben Radcliffe, who appeared in Masters of the Air, as Newland Archer. Margo Martindale, of Justified fame, will play Mrs Manson-Mingott.
The logline describes the show as a "passionate and heartrending will-they-or-won’t-they love triangle" that delves into freedom, duty, identity, and love. The adaptation aims to stay true to Wharton's novel while resonating with a modern audience, traversing the ballrooms and bedrooms of its young characters.
The series is created and written by Emma Frost. Shannon Murphy will direct the first three episodes, with Lisa Brühlmann and Natalia Leite directing the remaining episodes. Wharton's novel was famously adapted into a 1993 film by Martin Scorsese, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Winona Ryder.
