Netflix is bringing Bella Mackie's best-selling 2021 novel How to Kill Your Family to the small screen, with Peaky Blinders star Anya Taylor-Joy set to play the lead role. The adaptation is scheduled to arrive next year.
A Revenge Tale Comes to Life
The novel, described as “the ultimate tale of revenge,” follows Grace Bernard, the product of an affair that billionaire Simon Artemis claims he doesn't remember, leaving Grace and her mother to fend for themselves.
“When her mother dies and Grace is rejected by the people who should love her, she transforms her anger into something useful — killing off her estranged extended family via morbidly creative means,” the synopsis reads. “Soon, Grace is clawing her way toward revenge and a hefty inheritance. But her mission pulls her away from what she really needs.”
Anya Taylor-Joy to Star
Taylor-Joy, who rose to fame as Gina Grey in seasons five and six of Peaky Blinders, will portray Grace Bernard. The 30-year-old actress has also been praised for her role as chess prodigy Beth Harmon in Netflix's The Queen's Gambit, which earned her a Golden Globe.
Her other notable roles include Split with James McAvoy, The Menu with Ralph Fiennes, Emma, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Taylor-Joy will be joined by Clive Owen, David Shields, and Orlanda Norman.
Netflix's UK Slate Expands
The announcement came alongside other Netflix reveals on Wednesday, August 26, including two Top Boy spin-offs and the upcoming drama The Unheard with Kate Winslet and Maxine Peake, written by Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne.
