Netflix viewers have been left 'glued' to their screens by an action drama series that has been described as a 'hidden gem'. Despite being cancelled after just one season, the show continues to attract new fans online.
The Brothers Sun is an action comedy drama that first premiered in January 2024. It stars Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh as the mother of the Sun brothers, alongside Justin Chien as Charles Sun and Sam Song Li as Bruce Sun. The cast is largely made up of fresh faces in television.
What Makes It Unique
Unlike other popular action dramas, the series blends two contrasting cultures. It juxtaposes the Taiwanese criminal underworld with western suburban life, striking a chord with viewers. The story centres on Bruce Sun, who believes he is an ordinary Californian until his brother Charles arrives from Taipei after a failed assassination attempt on their crime boss father.
Bruce discovers his family's gangster past and the reason he moved to California as a child: his mother had information that forced them into hiding. Her efforts to shield him from the gangster lifestyle have been enduring, but perhaps not for much longer.
Fans Praise the Series
A review on Rotten Tomatoes says: "As a big martial arts and action movie fan I absolutely loved this series. It has a phenomenal soundtrack, creative characters, and a plot line that keeps you guessing, which is rare."
One fan took to social media to describe it as an "immaculate TV series", praising its "great plot" and dark humour, declaring it was "entertaining throughout". Another viewer commented: "A hugely enjoyable series with a great cast. The acting is great, the plot keeps you glued, there's terrific action and laugh out loud comedy. One of my favourite live-action series of recent years... and then it got cancelled."
Cancellation Despite Popularity
The show was not commissioned for a second series. The news was confirmed by Deadline in March 2024, just two months after its release, citing insufficient viewership figures. Despite this, audiences can't seem to get enough.
A further viewer echoed the same feeling: "This was a total hidden gem. The best series I have seen in a long while, I was so looking forward to a second season. Only to discover it's cancelled. Netflix you are nuts to cancel this, it was so good."
