Netflix's new film Don't Say Good Luck is out this weekend and has already been dubbed a 'tearjerker' by fans – and it comes with a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Premise and Plot
Don't Say Good Luck is a coming-of-age comedy-drama following Sophie Birenbaum (played by Sunny Sandler), a gifted high school theatre student who wins the coveted lead role in her school's production of the musical Waitress. Yet her joy is immediately overshadowed by devastating family news. Just moments before her audition, she overhears that her mother's cancer has returned.
The story follows Sophie's emotional journey as she attempts to juggle teenage romance, rehearsals, and school life while trying to hold her family together and keep her world from unravelling.
Cast and Crew
The film boasts an impressive mix of fresh young talent and established Hollywood names. Adam Sandler's daughter Sunny, 17, takes on her first ever leading role as Sophie. Melanie Lynskey — best known for playing Rose in Two and a Half Men — portrays Elizabeth, Sophie's devoted and ailing mother.
Max Greenfield, familiar to audiences from New Girl, plays Ted, Sophie's caring father. Meanwhile, Steve Buscemi and Bebe Neuwirth appear as Sophie's watchful grandparents. Stephanie Beatriz takes on the role of Ms. Parker, the school's trendy drama teacher, while Jack Champion portrays Jack, Sophie's charming leading man and potential love interest.
The film is helmed by Julia Hart (Stargirl, Miss Stevens), who co-wrote the script alongside Laura Hankin and her husband, Jordan Horowitz. Adam Sandler and wife Jackie are on board as producers under their Happy Madison Productions banner.
