British thrillers have long dominated cinema, with classics like A Clockwork Orange, Layer Cake and Casino Royale among the most iconic. That tradition continues today, as a newly released horror has been hailed as the 'film of the year' by audiences.
The highly anticipated 28 Years Later, the sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, hit cinemas earlier this year and has proved a landmark moment for British filmmaking. The film reunites Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Alex Garland.
The cast features Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Edvin Ryding and Erin Kellyman, among others. The synopsis reads: 'It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected.'
Boasting an impressive 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, one critic branded 28 Years Later 'the best movie of the year'. The critics' consensus reads: '28 Years Later taps into contemporary anxieties with the ferocious urgency of someone infected with Rage Virus, delivering a haunting and visceral thrill ride that defies expectations.'
A fan of the film labelled it as a 'masterpiece', while another described it as 'a rocking gem of a movie'. David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter stated: '28 Years Later subverts expectations in many ways... Boyle and Garland still have plenty of fresh inspiration for pulse-pounding terror.'
