Netflix has confirmed the future of more than a dozen of its original titles, but the announcement drew criticism from fans who spotted a common issue. The streamer has cancelled several high-profile shows after just one season this year, including crime drama The Waterfront, western series The Abandons and sci-fi mystery thriller The Boroughs.
On social media, Netflix listed around a dozen titles that have either entered production for a new season or are about to. The announcement followed the latest trailer for The Gentlemen season 2 and news that a third season has already been commissioned. However, no confirmation or denial was given regarding rumours that Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, could join the cast.
Production Updates for Returning Series
Netflix UK's X account began a thread with several updates. The post read: "Seeing as we've just confirmed season 3 of The Gentlemen, here's an update on what's happening with some of your other favourite returning Netflix series..."
It was followed by the reveal that House of Guinness, from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, is set to return. The 19th-century Dublin set period drama, inspired by the history of the famous family, will see them wrestle with ambition, intrigue and forbidden love. Production is set to begin in early 2027, as is the case for Neil Forsyth's undercover customs thriller, which will also return for a second season. Returning cast members such as Steve Coogan are yet to be confirmed.
Fans Frustrated by Long Waits
Meanwhile, production for Black Mirror season 8 has already begun, and Supacell season 2 has just wrapped. Supacell fans have been waiting more than two years for a follow-up to the series about five ordinary people who unexpectedly develop superpowers. Spy thriller Black Doves, starring Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw and Sarah Lancashire, is set to debut its second season later this year. Production is also underway for Bridgerton season 5, expected to release next year.
The thread wrapped up with confirmations that Wednesday season 3, Ginny & Georgia season 4, Emily In Paris season 6 and The Night Agent season 4 are all on the way. However, many fans were distracted by the fact that production for the likes of House of Guinness and Legends would not get underway until next year, meaning a release date would likely not be possible until 2028.
Dedicated viewers believed Netflix should have got everything in order much sooner. One person replied to the thread: "Production begins in 2027?? What the f***, the 2nd season should already be done." Another commented: "What do you meant IN PRODUCTION? I thought it was already in production by like months!"
Fans of Netflix's reality series should be satisfied, though, as new seasons of Formula 1 Drive to Survive, Being Gordon Ramsay, At Home with the Furys and Love Is Blind UK are all expected to arrive in 2027.
