Nadiya Bychkova has dashed hopes of an immediate return to Strictly Come Dancing, confirming that a quick-fire comeback is not on the cards despite recent discussions. The Ukrainian professional dancer, who was axed from the show in March after almost a decade, had hinted last month that a return was "absolutely" possible, but now says it will not happen in time for the upcoming series.
Exit and Initial Hopes
Bychkova announced in March that she was not part of the show's future, a decision confirmed by the BBC, which thanked her for her "incredible contribution" and praised her "elegance, artistry and unwavering dedication to the ballroom" since her arrival in 2017. She was one of five professionals to leave the show this year, alongside Karen Hauer, Gorka Marquez, Luba Mushtuk, and Michelle Tsiakkas.
In June, Bychkova told Hello magazine that a return was "absolutely on the cards," stating that talks were underway for her to "come and choreograph some of the pro numbers." However, she has now clarified that those plans will not materialise for the 2024 series.
Timing Conflicts
Speaking to The Sun, Bychkova explained the timing does not work: "Not now because I’m taking some time in August. Strictly is already working on the group numbers, but I’ve just finished my second tour with Nikita [Kuzmin], so it’s been full-on. I’m really looking forward to wrapping it all up and going away on holiday with the family."
Despite ruling out an immediate return, she left the door open for the future: "We’ll see what the season brings and how our schedules align. It would definitely be a pleasure to work with the team behind the scenes and be able to create."
No Hard Feelings
There appears to be no animosity between Bychkova and Strictly bosses. Earlier this summer, she expressed enthusiasm about potentially choreographing for the show: "The team have known for years how passionate I am about creating things and choreographing. Lots of producers came to watch shows that I did myself. This is the natural thing to do, because of what I love and what I want to do. It would be beautiful to see some of my creations and stories that I want to tell through dance on Strictly one day."
Bychkova released a statement upon her exit, reflecting on her nine-year journey: "After nine wonderful years, this part of my journey with Strictly Come Dancing is evolving. There is something truly special about being part of a programme that plays such a big part in so many people’s lives." She thanked fans, partners, fellow professionals, judges, and behind-the-scenes staff, adding: "I joined the show as an athlete and a double world champion."
Upcoming Series
Strictly Come Dancing is due to return in September. Among the celebrities already announced are actress Lacey Turner, reality TV favourite Dani Dyer, singer Delta Goodrem, celebrity stylist Chris Appleton, and television presenter Will Best. The show has also brought in five new professional dancers to replace those who departed.
