A new television series centred on the iconic adversary of Sherlock Holmes, Professor James Moriarty, is currently in development. The project, operating under the working title 'Moriarty', aims to reimagine the classic Sherlock Holmes universe by placing the spotlight squarely on the criminal mastermind.
Production and Creative Team
The series is a collaborative effort between Fremantle and Archery Pictures, the production company founded by Bafta-nominated producer Kris Thykier. The writing duties have been entrusted to Chris Cornwell and Oliver Lansley, who will craft the narrative for this fresh take on the Moriarty character.
Plot Overview
In this iteration, Moriarty is portrayed as a professor of criminal psychology at Durham University. By day, he is a respected academic, but secretly, he orchestrates elaborate and sophisticated criminal operations across northern England. His life takes a dramatic turn when he is compelled to join the police force as a consultant. There, he partners with Detective Imogen Burrows, and together they work to dismantle a rival criminal empire. All the while, Moriarty must carefully conceal his true identity as a master criminal.
Casting Details
As of now, no casting announcements have been made for the lead role or supporting characters. However, the character of Moriarty has been portrayed by several notable actors in previous adaptations, including Jared Harris, Andrew Scott, and Donal Finn. The new series promises to bring a fresh perspective to this legendary figure.
