Monty Don presents his final episode of the BBC's Gardeners' World tonight, bringing a 23-year tenure to a close as viewers share emotional tributes to the beloved presenter.
Earlier this week, Don shared a video marking the end of an era after announcing his departure from the programme. The BBC has not yet confirmed who will succeed him as host.
A final message from Longmeadow
Ahead of the broadcast, Don said: "This Friday will be my very last Gardeners' World. I began 23 years ago. For 16 years, we've been filming in this garden with my various dogs, and that's come to an end. But it's a brilliant programme, as ever, and it's been a complete privilege to be part of it. So join me on Friday for the last time."
In the video, Don called to his dog, saying "Shall we go?" as Ned jumped over the fence at Longmeadow.
Fans share heartfelt tributes
Supporters responded quickly to the footage, with many saying they felt moved by his exit. One viewer wrote: "The words 'welcome to Gardeners World' will never sound the same." Another added: "Emotional times. Wonderful Monty. Ever grateful for all your magic at Longmeadow." A third posted with a crying face emoji: "I was not prepared for this."
Several viewers recalled cherished memories and described how Don had helped them through difficult periods. One wrote: "Oh, I will miss you on Gardeners' World so much. My husband died in August and we always watched it together. He had Alzheimer's but always perked up when he heard the Gardeners' World Theme. He talk and contribute to your conversation as if a switch had been flicked. Thank you from the bottom of my broken heart."
Another posted: "Monty, I'm going to miss you so much, and your beautiful dog Ned, your advice, your gentle voice, and personal delivery. I'm not sure I'll ever be ready for the end of this particular era. Thank you so much for inspiring so many of us, and please keep posting on Instagram."
Reasons for leaving
Earlier this year, Don explained his decision to step away from the programme, saying it felt like the "right time" for a new direction. He confirmed he would remain involved with the BBC on other projects.
He said: "Throughout that time - and around seven hundred programmes - I have had the privilege of sharing my own abiding passion for gardens and gardening with an equally passionate, and often equally knowledgeable audience.
"That connection with millions, not just in Britain but across the world, who share a love of gardens, plants and the natural world, is something I have always treasured and which I increasingly believe to be at the heart of a life well lived.
"I have also always relished the craft of programme making and to do so, week in week out, as part of a superlative BBC team has been a deeply rewarding experience. But now is the right time for a change.
"I look forward to continuing to work with and for the BBC on other projects, as well as following new avenues. There are more books to write, more programmes to make. And of course, I will still be gardening, dog by my side, here at Longmeadow."
Gardeners' World can be streamed on BBC iPlayer.
