Michelle Monaghan has been cast in the lead role of an untitled eight-episode hockey drama series for Netflix, produced by Shawn Levy's 21 Laps under its overall deal with the streamer.
The series is set in the small working-class town of South Dorothy, Minnesota, where the high school hockey team has long produced state championships and NHL stars under legendary coach “Sully” Sullivan. After a bus crash kills several players and Sully himself, the town turns to his widow, Harper Sullivan (Monaghan), to coach a new team of grieving young men. The story follows the underdog team as they come together to galvanise the town and turn their shared loss into a driving force.
The project was created by Nick Naveda, who executive produces with showrunner Bridget Bedard. Trey Edward Shults will direct the first two episodes. Naveda said: “I’ve carried South Dorothy and its people in my heart for as long as I can remember. To finally bring that world to life with my Grizzly family at 21 Laps and Netflix is nothing short of a dream come true.”
Shawn Levy, whose production company previously collaborated with Netflix on Stranger Things, All the Light We Cannot See, The Perfect Couple and The Adam Project, said: “This show has long been a 21 Laps favorite and one of the best pieces we have had the privilege of developing and supporting.” Levy executive produces with Dan Levine and Robert Atwood for 21 Laps, with Moera Ainai producing.
