Sir Michael Caine, renowned for his roles in World War II classics such as The Eagle Has Landed and Escape to Victory, once took on the role of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in a television miniseries. The 1994 production, titled World War II: When Lions Roared, featured Caine opposite Bob Hoskins as Sir Winston Churchill and John Lithgow as President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The two-part, three-hour miniseries was produced for NBC and marked the first video production to be broadcast in high definition in the United States. It received critical acclaim and earned six Emmy Award nominations, including a Best Actor nomination for Caine's portrayal of Stalin.
For its UK home release, the miniseries was edited into a two-hour film under the alternate title Then There Were Giants. The full three-hour version is now available to stream for free with advertisements on Freevee, a service hosted by Amazon Prime Video.
