Met Gala's Most Memorable Outfits: From Kim's Wet Dress to Katy's Chandelier
Met Gala's Most Memorable Outfits: A Look Back

The Met Gala is back tonight, and we are undoubtedly set to witness some incredible outfits. This year, the theme is strictly Fashion Is Art, where guests are invited to 'explore their relationship to fashion as an embodied art form and celebrate depictions of the dressed body throughout art history'. However, this Met Gala is reportedly being snubbed by some huge names, who have vowed to stay away. Protests have been organised over sponsors Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's involvement. The pair are the main sponsors this year and are honorary co-chairs alongside Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour. As we wait to see tonight's outfits, here, we take a look back at some of the most memorable outfits to date!

In 2019, Kim Kardashian wore a Thierry Mugler gown, which was meant to look like she was soaking wet. Jewels 'dropped' down off the dress and took a whopping eight months to make. She said on the carpet: 'This is the first time in 20 years Mr. Mugler has designed for the House of Mugler. So to come and design this gown for me is such an honour. This is about eight months in the making. He envisioned me this California girl stepping out of the ocean, wet, dripping.'

Singer Katy Perry turned heads on the carpet in 2019 when she dressed as a giant crystal chandelier, her outfit even complete with glowing lights. Designer Jeremy Scott said at the time: 'There is a built-in corset consisting of 18 steel bones and two hidden battery packs to illuminate the lights. I mean who wants to wear a chandelier that doesn't light up!'

Designed by Versace, Kendall and Kylie Jenner adopted the 'showgirl' look. 'We kinda decided to go for it. Kylie and I worked on it and we came up with a fun vibe with Donatella. My dress has a lot of feathers at the bottom, so I almost tripped myself but, yeah. I saw pictures, she's a rock star and I love her. She's amazing,' Kendall said of their gowns.

In 2021, it was the couples red carpet debut together for Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, but all eyes were on the rapper's rather large blanket style coat. The quilted blanket was very different to Rihanna's black coat dress, which featured no less than 267 carats of Bulgari jewels.

For the 2018 Met Gala, which had a Roman Catholic theme, Rihanna took inspiration from the theme. She wore a pearl and jewel-encrusted robe alongside a papal mitre and necklace, all which were adorned with multiple jewels.

Kim Kardashian might feature a lot in this list, but she has had some iconic outfits. In 2021, she wore a full head mask to the Met Gala. It seemed at the time that the outfit was a link to her now-ex-husband Kanye West's upcoming album, Donda, which artwork was a single black square.

In 2017, Jaden Smith arrived on the Met Gala carpet in what seemed to be a simple black shirt, trousers and a matching coat. However, his accessory had everyone talking. He walked the carpet clutching one handful of his own blonde hair.

Kim Kardashian arrived as a plus one for her then-husband Kanye West in a floral dress in 2013, whilst pregnant with her eldest child North. Speaking about the now infamous gown years later, Kim recalled how she was in tears after the event, when her outfit was compared to Mrs. Doubtfire. 'I think Robin Williams even tweeted it, said I looked like Mrs. Doubtfire. I was crying the whole way home because I just couldn't believe it,' she said.

A popular look for the Met Gala is a 'wet look', and Doja Cat was no different when she arrived at the event in a gown inspired by the 'wet white t-shirt look'. She said of the dress: 'I know that people are going to do flowers, but my flower of choice is the most-used flower. And it's cotton. I wanted to do a white T-shirt, also because a white T-shirt is timeless. And it felt very poetic to choose this. I knew it wasn't going to blend in too much, and I don't really like to blend in.'

Jared Leto arrived at the Met Gala in 2019 with the most unusual accessory: a copy of his own head. The actor brought the accessory along for the 2019 theme, which was 'Camp: Notes on Fashion'.

Rihanna's Met Gala dress got everyone talking, and ordering pizza. The singer wowed in the bright yellow gown, which was quickly made into multiple pizza-themed memes. 'I think it's really cute! I'm very happy. This dress is very important - if people find this dress interesting and funny, I think it's great. Rihanna is wearing this dress for entertainment - not for a fashion show,' the designer said of the gown.
