Manchester United are set to face Rosenborg this week, two years after their last meeting, which saw significant changes in both the playing staff and management. Six of the 11 starters from that match have since left or retired, with two more possibly leaving before the transfer window closes.
Managerial and squad overhaul
Erik ten Hag was United's manager for the previous encounter in Trondheim, shortly after winning the FA Cup. Noah Holm scored the winner for Rosenborg. Ten Hag left months later, replaced by Ruben Amorim, who lasted 14 months before exiting in January 2026. Michael Carrick now leads the team for the latest trip.
Of the starting XI from that friendly, only goalkeeper Radek Vitek remains at the club from the back five. Jonny Evans, who played in defence, is now retired and part of Carrick's coaching staff. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Will Fish left the following month, with Wan-Bissaka's West Ham relegated to the Championship and Fish's Cardiff promoted. Sam Murray, another defender, left for Carlisle in 2025 and is now seeking a new club.
Midfield and forward changes
Casemiro, who played in midfield, left in summer 2026 and now plays for Inter Miami. Mason Mount remains a United player, while Hannibal Mejbri moved to Burnley in August 2024. In attack, Marcus Rashford spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Barcelona, but the Catalan club did not trigger a buy option, leaving his future uncertain.
Youngsters Ethan Williams and Ethan Wheatley, who started the game, are still at United. Vitek, who started in goal, hinted at a possible departure: "At the moment, I am still here, but we will see. I hope so. I hope there will be some interest."
